Chinese internet companies have created millions of new blue-collar jobs ranging from delivery workers for online takeaway platforms and drivers for car-hailing apps, to home cleaners and people maintaining shared bikes or cars. China has prioritised such jobs as a way of maintaining high employment as the county’s manufacturing sector slows down. But many workers in the new sectors have complained about the high pressure and anxiety that comes with such jobs, and are urging companies to pay more attention to their well-being and offer more-flexible working environments.

  • The problems highlighted in the video are happy problems, problems brought about by having jobs. These problems can be mitigated over time. These are better than unemployment. If you have none of these problems because of unemployment, then you really have a problem.

  • I’m very doubtful that the extra 5-10 mins given to drivers will actually be for their benefit and not used by the companies to make them do extra duties in between. If the gov and companies already treat them like that for profit, giving them an extra few minutes won’t change anything. All it does is shut up the story and make the people who order not feel so bad for their treatment.

  • In the Western world, unemployment is on the rise because Companies don't want to give high-income jobs to too many local workers. In a developing country like China, many people are employed, but are subject to terrible wages and working conditions because the Companies don't want to lose profits. The situations are different, but the problem is the same across the world.

Stop exploiting them while the management sit in office enjoying the blood and sweat of these blue collar workers

  • The market of delivery is totally failure for the moment. While most of the customers, including me, do not care about the delivery time, those men and companies hurry too much to finish as many as possible the deliveries. To be honest, when I walk on the streets, I never saw any those riders follow the rules, red sign for them is nothing and they won't stop for green sign for sure. Not only they are easily hurted, but also hurt others. I think it is the companies who push those workers to accelerate the pace which in turn result in many accidences for their sake of PROFIT. This market needs regulations!

  • It's very strange for me to see older people doing this kind of jobs. In my country only young people work in the food delivery business, older people usually have a better economic condition and lived better lives compared to today's young. In China it's probably the opposite, young people have better education and make more money compared to old people who were left behind.

    佐藤仁佐藤仁Bulan Yang lalu
    • @佐藤仁 Young and old are equally poor in China, but the urban youngsters generally have more ego than the old ones so they are less likely to be willing to work as blue collars, they rather sit in office doing some clerk work earning less than 500 USD per month than doing delivery or construction works which typically earn way more than most of the white collar jobs. Before the pandemic delivery men and contruction workers could earn up to 1.8k USD per month in China's first tier cities.

Xue LiXue Li24 hari yang lalu
    • @Xue Li There are more rich people in China than the whole population of Japan, actually. What i wanted to say is that older people are richer than young people in Japan and in western countries, while looking at the age of those delivery people (who I assume are not rich), the opposite is true for China.

      佐藤仁佐藤仁24 hari yang lalu

Yet, mostly state companies and non-state cooperative companies cover their workers with an insurance. Moreover, sometimes private companies choose a non-state insurance institution. For instance, Uber CR and Assa Insurances joined forces after local red cabs had criticized Uber didn't provide insurance to their "associated employees"

Moreover, the tipping system gives employers the excuse to keep wages low, and that's how American catering businesses managed to keep costs down for years. Wages needs to be regulated. Talking about passing the buck, that's ridiculous. The delivery driver is the heart of the delivery business. If you don't have a delivery driver, your company won't be making deliveries. Step up and take care of your employees. You can operate safely and still make a profit. Plus, you increase your employee and customer loyalty because you demonstrate that you actually care about people.
