It's like a spaceship for sharks.

"Life support system" were the three key words that convinced me to do a video about an aquarium. Because yes: behind the scenes at The Deep, an aquarium in Hull, there's a life support system, and it deserves that name.
Thanks to all the team at The Deep! More about them: www.thedeep.co.uk/ or on their channel: idworlds.info

I guess technically it's more of a "space station for sharks", or "space station for all sorts of marine life", but that doesn't sound quite as catchy.
Go to bed Tom
@Nick Adams thank you Nick, I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets annoyed by that
Why did I read this in your accent?
WHAT KIND OF SHIP DOESN’T GO ANYWHERE, TOM SCOTT?
Could have just said fish
Drink every time you hear the phrase "Life support system"
I been to hull
Looks like the video is too much summarized. It would have been nice to see a little more of the "uninteresting" details. Thanks, Tom
I am going down all the channels I subscribe to and asking them if they can set up a channel on Rumble ... that way I can get rid of the IDworlds app but still see all the best creators who I have grown to love. Thanks in advance.
Sawfish in there nice
I think aquariums may be missing the boat... I bet a LOT more people would be eager to visit a "Spaceship for Sharks!" :)
3:26 It's just that. An "exhibit". These are animals that should be where they belong in the seas and oceans and not held in captivity and ogled at by humans
I thought this was clickbait but then I realised how interesting and cool this really is. It's like that giant greenhouse experiment in the desert somewhere, but for fish.
That's cool but I'm still going to have nightmares about spaceships full of sharks... Meh, worth it.
.
Why would I be more interested in the behind the scenes machinery and logistics of attractions like this?
one small step for fish...
I reckon that this was definitely one of the AI generated video titles.
Hello I am a Hullian
mm fishy
How did you find the older, less Australian version of Derek Muller from Veritasium?
The aquarium could double as an aquaponic farm haha
“Biology and zoology never really interested me.” That’s why we have resident ornithologist Chris Joel.
Cool!
Me as a German reading the description: "'Lebenerhaltungssystem' is one word. 🤔"
One of the places where you'll be able to see fish that haven't yet ingested microplastics
You should make a video about right to repair and Louis Rossmann's campaign to get it passed in Massachusetts and hopefully hopefully other places that follow.
Awesome video of an amazing place!
The best thing about this is that even if the ocean next to the aquarium is contaminated, the aquarium really isnt affected at all
Tom scott, His majesty is dead.
How old are you?
You had me at sharkies!!!
The exhibit: hmm fish The Life Support system: hmm advanced water
Just when you thought it was safe to leave the atmosphere... Jaws XXVII: Jaws... IN SPACE!!!!!
1:20 i see some COPVS (Composite-overwrapped-pressure-vessel) thats nice
I wonder if instead of being converted to N2 gas the nitrates could be reused elsewhere as fertiliser.
Why couldn't they just filter the sea water? Edit: Ahh it's by a river. That's why!
And it's incredibly muddy. It would have to be left to settle for ages before it could be used.
Hey I go to that aquarium, this is so bizarre to watch
This is very similar to the wastewater treatment systems used in treating municipal wastewater, but with the added complexity of working with salt water.
I never thought you weren't interested in biology.
Hey Tom, can you make a video on the navigation satellite system "Galileo". A system developed by ESA to compete with the GPS from US? As far as I know it is supposed to be way more precise and also more accessible for private people / businesses. Sounds like a cool thing and brings the European countries closer together since it has people working from all across the EU and companies from all the countries contributing to its development. I really like it's idea and I am even considering just doing my master to work for ESA and hopefully be able to contribute to this project in the future or a new one. I just really really like the idea of people from different nationalities coming together to create something to make everyone's lives better, even when those countries were at war not even 100 years ago. Thanks :)
Imagine end of the world those fish be dead any way. They need to be put back in the ocean imagine if corona virus was real and wiped every one out?.
This might sound stupid but for long term space travel wouldn't this might actually work? For actual spaceships? For sharks at least
Tom, you haven’t been aging well. I just watched a video of you from 6 years ago but you looked 15 years younger than you are now.
I only understood about half of what they were doing, but I appreciate the ingenuity!
It's just some fish
Everything now will sound like an AI generated idea, no matter whether or not it actually is.
BEHOLD! MY FOAM FRACTION-INATOR!
I just realized that you were in that one show called connect and THAT PONYTAIL THO
Damn, top notch video!! I always enjoy your videos, short and full of information. Just to the point! Though I would have loved an explanation on why the microbes where exposed to UV-light. My 'slightly educated' guess is, that this is how they dispose of them. EDIT: By 'slightly educated' I mean the fact that UV-light is non-preferrable to most organisms on our planet (the atmosphere of the earth absorbs most of the shorter wavelengths - one of the keywords here is 'ozone'), which is why we humans have a chance of getting skin cancer by being exposed to the sun for too long. In short: UV-light alters our DNA, which can lead to cancer when our immune system can't dispose of those altered cells.
This was an awesome video and a great thing to get some insight about. Thanks
When will we run out of music melodies?
Ben Jones looks like Ben Affleck, if Ben Affleck just really liked fishies
that is an awesome building inside and out.
I dare to change your chanel name to tommmyinnnit scott
maybe make sth about videos that crash discord?
Can't wait to visit The Deep once it reopens
It’s like a spaceship for sharks.
This is extremely cool and i want to work there, even if it's just cleaning haha
I wasn’t expecting this to be as interesting as it was, wow!
This building is hideous.
Video about Esperanto?
For a second I thought Ben Jones was Ben Affleck
What an awesome video, my home town is a few miles down the road from Hull, the deep is super nostalgic since it was our go-to day out trip!
The guide looks like a slightly older, English Veritasium
Aquariums are such magnificent places! The one in Atlanta, GA is particularly fun to visit (at least, before Covid)
I'm just wondering why not just pump ocean water? The UK is an island and getting ocean water isn't difficult I'm sure
As a citizen of Hull, i appreciate you showing one of our great landmarks to your audience, great video tom!
Your missing out on the Atlanta aquarium, its like this but easily 10 times the amount of pipes and tanks, theres actually over 70 miles of pipe in the Georgia aquarium and the building has more than 11 million gallons of water in it and 1.5 million pounds of salt to go with it, the whole building is an engineering marvel
Is that K or Na ionic resine? So both substituting salt for salt. I don't get it.
Nice to see hull in a video🙂
Anyone who's visited The Deep knows it's got a lot of steps. I always wondered what went on in the parts of the building behind all the doors you pass as you go. Also, if you visit once, your ticket acts as a year pass. Unfortunately we went in late 2019... :)
A dumb question though, why not use sea water right outside?
Poor sharks
I saw the thumbnail and immediately said - my man’s in HULL. Life in the North, eh?
"School for gifted axolotls"
Today’s video brought to you by the word scavenge !, great video and really interesting to see behind the scenes at an aquarium.
No one going to comment on that diver at 3:55
Thomas Scotland.
2:00 Imagine god talking to a camera explaining his 'life support system' of the earth. 'they like oxygen, so inside here we placed some trees on the dry areas and plankton in de waters'
This is the least Tom Scott title of any Tom Scott video.
I didn't watch this video specifically because you mentioned uk covid law at the beginning. Social distancing is terrorism.
Tom: "It's just some fish, right?" Fish: 🙁🙁🙁🙁
This was great. More from the deep!
Why 1080p50?
03:34 "Spaceship for sharks" 😄 By the way: what prevents oxygen or air inside the ozone layer and not sucked out to space? Especially when travelling to the space with a spaceship (and going out to space). 🤔
I like how Tom added a period in the tile to really emphasize it.
WOW Amazing 🙂🚂🚂🚂
Alternative title, "Company takes great pride in building a prison for fish and giving them the basic necessities for life".
As an aquarist on a much smaller scale, I can appreciate that much of the life support process can be seen in a well-kept home aquarium. The nitrogen cycle is such a fascinating subject! I found the final step of nitrogen off-gassing very interesting, as typical home aquaria require regular water changes to remove accumulated nitrates. (I can’t imagine how many buckets you’d need to do a 50% water change on a system of that size!)
Why do like 30% of your video thumbnails have a red stripe on the left and another 30% have a triangle?
Shout-out to the wonderful architect that designed the building to look like a ship
So, almost like the Klingon cruiser in Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home :-)
4:50 Wanna commend the editing crew for insuring at least one flight of stairs was included previously for "3 floors down" scale to make most sense.
Ah come on Tom, don't lie. One of them AI title generators came up with this idea and you just couldn't resist doing it :P
Nah, more so a "submarine for sharks" but actually a promarine (if that's the correct prefix)
I'll add that to my todo list
Ben Jones is like the marine biology version of Derek from Veritasium.
ya 6ft between no mask ppl is a hilarious joke. Go thing brain dead outdated advice like that is what the public is told to stay safe. Thats not how it works and its killing THOUSANDS everyday because people are to scared to tell the truth that its a minimum of 21ft which is the diameter of the bubble of infected air one human spits out of there pie hole. But please listen to governments who have never lied to the public before. nope never......
I love aquariums. It's like exploring another world. Plus, they're usually well air conditioned, so it's great for hanging out at in the summer.
1:49 I like mudkips.
Very interesting how many of the technologies used to clean the water for the aquarium are the same technologies that are used to clean drinking water and waste water for a city water system.
I like to think of it as a reverse submarine
04:25 "Here is where we alter the mixture of air -" thunk. Fishy screams of terror imagined emanating from the other room. XD
