2020 BMW F900R vs Kawasaki Z900

There are a million ways to skin a cat, as they say, and the field that is the 900cc-ish middleweight naked bike segment is a perfect example. Just take these two cats. We recently put the KTM 890 Duke R and Triumph Street Triple R head-to-head, Burns gave us flack for not throwing the Kawasaki Z900 in the mix. I still don’t think it quite has enough to top its Austrian or British counterparts, but it’s peppy enough and should be thrown up against something - if for nothing else than to shut John up.

  • I bought the first Kawasaki Z900 2021. I didn’t like it. I think that Kawasaki is not an honest company. You don’t offer a application or product that it doesn’t work. I will be with the Z900 one year and I will sell it. Kawasaki never more. Don’t waste your time and money if you thinking buying new Kawasaki.

  • LOVE THIS VIDEO! Love the disagreements and honesty. It doesn't always need to be combative, but agreeing to disagree is US. Let's do that diplomatically. Like you too did. Perfect. And I'm looking for a 900. I didn't know BMW made a budget bike? How is my hard earned $9000 a budget for a bike. I bought a new GS750 in the late '70's for roughly $1000. Car's haven't gone up as much.... thanks!

  • I’m from Brazil and have a 2015’ F800R. I like it very much but I’d observed that 3-pistons (MT’s and Triumphs) along with 4-pistons (Z’s, GSX’s...) have massive presence on bike events. Many BMW’s fans put their money on GS (Big Trail) models and I doubt if BMW will bring F900R to Brazil as a regular imported bike.

  • If BMW wanted to play in this space, they should have brought a slightly better machine. It's still doing nothing for me. Not that it is a bad bike at all - It just looks kinda cheap and budgety sans the dash. I think the Z900 is a better bike. All day every day. I'd take a Street Triple RS over this too. I don't like Parallel twins - especially this one. Having said that, I would take a Duke 890R over this too. And what is this shit about I-4 engines having no character? What a load of crap. I own a Big-V, a Triple and an I-4, and that 4-cylinder is by far the strongest of the bunch. It has this amazing growl, which turns into an intense howl when you whack the throttle. It's so smooth and unstressed you can cruise all day. Yet it generates relentless power and torque whenever you want it. And it's absolutely bullet proof. That screams character. I love all my engines, but I have a special place in my heart for this 1255cc beauty. But hey, the F900R looks to be a very decent machine. Just don't think for a moment you are going to pay 9 grand for one. I have looked and you can't touch one for under 15 grand around here thanks to BMW's predatory "option packages"! But hey, If you HAVE to have a BMW, and that is your budget, I'm sure it will be fine.

  • Maybe you guys should have waited 3 months to do this video. MT09 updates make both these bikes look dated. This coming from a person that replaced my MT09 with a 2019 Z900 and very much love the Z900, but it Kawasaki needs add a quick shift up and down to this bike. Should have been added in the 2020 update.

  • Waay too much Kawa bias in this review. Knowing the F900XR and the Z900 (and the MT09), it's pretty clear the old dude is a big kawa fan, 'cause he can only argue for the Z900 by talking down the strengths of the other bike, while marginalizing the weaknesses of the Z900. When a 'reporter' is so clearly biased towards a particular brand/bike, the review comes across as non credible. The Z900 _is_ good, perhaps better than the BMW for many buyers, but certainly not a bike that beats the MT09 as clearly as claimed - the engine on the MT09 is nothing short of a gem, with _much_ more character than the Z900. But applying the old dude's 'logic', "he wouldn't notice", rendering the point irrelevant apparently. .

  • I'm only 5'5" sat on f900 and it felt uncomfortably tall, lot of effort to get it off the side stand. The z900 was a breeze and not too tall. F900r gas tank 3.4 gal is a deal breaker anyway. I think the new Honda cb650r should be included as it is a higher spec machine than the other 650's, hence the higher price. At 94hp and less weight I think it would be a fair comparison.

  • That really surprises me, the Kawi is proven, the BMW ain't half bad, but my Street Triple makes more power stock, than both. I have seen the BMW in person and honestly to me, it really doesn't look like a "true" naked bike like the Kawi, or my Triumph. Looked like they took an ADV bike, lowered it a bit, and cut the ADV fairing.

  • 40% failure rate on BMWs, Consumer Reports 2015, doubt much has changed. My 09' BMW R12R has had one engineering failure after another, flattened rear bearing, cracked plastic throttle cams, FI pump spewing gas all over the place, on it third gas gauge now. Did have a K1200 LT , went 1000s of miles, no break downs but was waiting for rear wheel bearing failure, and hideous maint costs due to the tupperware.
