Remember a few years back when your only option in the small-sportbike category was a Ninja 250? These days, nearly every manufacturer has an affordable small-displacement bike in its lineup. And with the introduction of Kawasaki's new-for-2018 Ninja 400, we figured it was time we rounded up the class and gave them a proper shakedown. So whether you've got a freshly minted motorcycle license and you're researching your first bike or you're a seasoned veteran looking for something light and fun, this episode ought to give you some valuable insight.

  • I own a 2015 KTM RC390 (hasn't blown up, yet) and a 2018 Ninja 400. Both are dedicated track bikes. 390 is stupid fun but feels cheap, toyish and a pain to work on. I'd swear some of the hardware is made out of cheddar cheese. 400 has that Japanese build quality and engineering that I've always appreciated (might be assembled elsewhere in Asia). The engine is way better than the 390 thumper. I can't believe Ari did a 1:51 at Sonoma Raceway on the RC. For us mortals I'd pick the 400 every time. It's just easier. 390 is over engineered and crammed together all around that little single 373cc. My 2¢

  • I get why they have gear position indicators, those are super awesome especially for a beginner street bike rider like me (I put one on my cbr300r) but I'm not really sure why you would want or need a shift light? Especially on a small CC street bike. Maybe thats just me though... Might be good for people who have never rode anything with a manual transmission.

  • Nice comparison video. I was down to same with Ninja and KTM. I think I’ll go with Ninja, it just looks sexier and sounds like the RC can develop some technical issues.

  • Why cbr300r instead of cbr500r I feel like that bike is more fitting in this class

Fa GyuFa Gyu3 bulan yang lalu
    • Weight. The 500 is heavy compared to the other bikes in the class @ 419lbs w/fuel. The 300 Honda is 100lbs lighter than the 500, the Ninja 400 is under 370 wet and KTM is about the same as the Ninja. Also, the CBR500R makes the same peak HP as the Ninja, albeit with a bit more torque but also doesn't rev as high. I have ridden all of the them, and also the 250 and 300 Kawasaki Ninjas (track-rode the 300). I rode the 500 a couple years ago and found it lacking - didn't handle particularly well. I much prefer the Ninja 400 or the KTM 390. I actually bought a 2020 Ninja 400 (non ABS) for track use and for my girlfriend to ride occasionally - my main bike is a 990cc Tuono Factory (V-2) and I also own a KTM 525 supermoto.

    • @Jeo Meo I mean the kawi is a 399cc it has the same power essentially as the 390 and the 500s the r3 and cbr 300 are 300-ish so not quite as powerful but the reason the 500s are so appealing to me is the smooth power delivery they have even the 500r and while that might not be a ,,real" sportbike thing it's really nice how linear it is.

Fa GyuFa Gyu2 bulan yang lalu
    • Th CB500F is basically alone in its class. the Duke 390 is between the Ninja and the upper cc Honda but both the KTM and Kawa models are the essentially the 300 class.

Mr. TornadoMr. Tornado3 bulan yang lalu
    • Depends. As a commuter or as a fun bike? The 400 is more fun, lighter and way more agile. The 650 is heavier but the engine makes more torque. I like the 650 but I own a 400 as a 3rd bike because it's so fun.

Dusty KitchkoDusty Kitchko4 bulan yang lalu
  • I have a KTM, love it - even ridden reasonably hard the consumption is 60 mpg (uk gallons). The dash is crap, with a pile of functions and only two buttons to navigate. The fuel guage is a joke - it goes from indicating near full to almost empty in a twelve mile distance. It has great steering lock for a sporty machine. I reckon the finish would not stand up to winter use. There is a big range of KTM accessories which can be fitted, which is fun if you’ve got the cash. It also has an idiotic average speed indicator, which always says 23mph, whatever one’s doing!

Drop the politics and send all the "top" advertising and "best" helmets to a test laboratory and post the results to show the riding community what they are buying does not provide adequate brain protection. Use 6D as the helmet to beat. Yes, Linear AND Angular Acceleration Mitigation. What do you say?

  • I owned an R3. for a first bike, or a first sport bike, it was phenomenal. It gets you used to the sport rider position, it looks good, has a really good looking dash, shift light, revs out to 12.5k, it's lightweight, and 35hp is definitely enough to cruise the interstates in the US. I would cruise at 8K rpm on the freeway in 6th gear. I got 50+ mpg, and although it wasn't blazing fast you could definitely leave people in the dust from the stop lights. I had a 50hp/60tq harley sportster before the r3 and the r3 had better straight line acceleration, top speed, braking, and cornering even though the harley had much more CC's, more hp and more torque. I then upgraded to a Buell Firebolt XB12R, which is a properly fast motorcycle. If you don't know what Buell's are, I got several videos up of mine.

IMO, if you're not doing extended freeway riding, just twistes (I live 5 minutes from the Malibu Canyons) it's hard to beat a small displacement, light bike. 130hp and 400+lbs doesn't do you much good mid-corner on Latigo....
